In Fontainebleau, the Imperial Theater reopens its doors
A major site of the arts scene existing in France, the Imperial Theater of Fontainebleau is finally reopening its doors to the general public.
Rebaptized Théâtre Cheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, one of the most superb stages in the world is back in the spotlight thanks to the generosity of the President of the United Arab Emirates. 12 years of work and more than 10 million euros were necessary to ensure the restoration works of this architectural masterpiece dating back to the Second Empire.
An imperial theater in Fontainebleau
This edifice has a long history. During a journey of Napoleon III and Eugénie to Fontainebleau, in 1853, the decision was made to implement a new theater and it was architect Hector Lefuel, who was selected to conceive a room able to seat 400 persons, featuring quilted silks, floral carpets and golden ornaments, conveying a scintillating atmosphere.
The renaissance of a historical master piece
Inspired by the one of Queen Marie-Antoinette, at the Trianon de Versailles, it is the last witness of a court theater to have preserved its historical assets, notably one of the most important ensembles of scenic decors in France.
