Galway, Ireland will be the 2020 European Capital of Culture
The Irish city of Galway has been elected European Capital of Culture and will kick off the festivities with a spectacular opening ceremony on 8 February 2020.
Irish’s largest port city on its western coast will roll out an agenda of one-of-a-kind events and artistic performances starting on 8 February 2020. Local stakeholders and international designers alike will harness the city’s religious and architectural heritage to promote the entire island as a major tourist destination.

In Eyre Square, the inaugural ceremony will be organised by the French company Gratte Ciel. The American artist David Best will create a piece with help from children from Derry and Galway counties, the Finnish artist Kari Kola will turn the Connemara Mountains green with a light display in honour of St. Patrick’s Day, and the Irish artist John Gerrard will create a giant pavilion made of mirrors.
