The Gruuthuse Museum, five centuries of history highlighted in Bruges
In Bruges, the palace of the Gruuthuse Lords has been converted into a museum hosting 5 centuries of the city's history.
Pronounce its name as you wish, but come pay a visit! It's still the best way of finding out more about the secrets of the town of Bruges, since 500 years. This magnificent palace has undergone a major renovation, and it's a wonder to discover its opulence while exploring the rich past of Bruges through an incomparable collection of tapestries, lace, sculptures, furniture and silverware.
The story of Bruges at the Gruuthuse Museum
The edifice was not always open. Renovated in keeping with traditional methods, the former lordshop of Louis de Gruuthuse, whose family's fortune was made thanks to a mix of spices used to brew beer, features stunning architectural ornamentations on its facades. Without forgetting the surprising panoramic views on this Venice of the North from its turrets.
A gigantic collection to be rediscovered
In the reception rooms, a new museum concept highlighting 600 collection pieces awaits only you to be rediscovered and leads you through 3 crucial periods of the town history: the period of the Burgundy prosperity, the 17th and 18th centuries, and the historical « reinvention » of Bruges during the 19th century. On site, be sure not to miss the oratory—it's the high point of any visit.
