Between Madrid and Seville, the town of Plasencia, in the heart of the Spanish province of Caceres, in Extremadura, offers cultural and natural pleasures at one and the same time.

Two-and-a-half hours from the Iberian capital, the city of Plasencia can boast an impressive architectural heritage disproportionate with its size. On the Plaza Mayor, time seems to have stopped in the 13th century, with the construction of the first cathedral. The artistic richness of this complex, two buildings juggling between Gothic and Romanesque styles, has no rival in the region.

Nature meets culture in Extremadura

The historic centre, to be found at the foot of the mountains, was founded by King Alfonso VIII of Castile in the Middle Ages. It abounds in palaces, like the Mirabel Palace, but also in lordly residences and splendid Renaissance churches, which make Plasencia the perfect spot from which to explore the region of Vera.

La Vera, a green region famous for Pimenton

Nestled in the heart of rural Spain, this region is scattered with ruins and Paradors, the national chain of luxury hotels nestled in fortresses, convents and monasteries. The circuit passes by breathtaking gorges, dense forests, sparkling rivers and lakes, and the whole region is under the spell of Pimenton de La Vera, the local paprika, because in Extremedura, gastronomy is king…
