Hubert de Givenchy, at the Museum of Lace and Fashion in Calais, France
From 15 June to 31 December 2017, the Museum of Lace and Fashion in Calais will exhibit 70 Hubert de Givenchy designs, sourced from private wardrobe collections and the fashion house’s archives.
French haute couture owes a lot to Hubert de Givenchy and his unparalleled prestige. With that in mind, the French department of culture and communication has taken upon itself to organise this exhibition which will document Givenchy’s fabulous career from start to finish. Highlights during his time featured life-changing encounters which shaped his internationally-renowned fashion repertoire.
A retrospective on Hubert de Givenchy, in Calais
Givenchy himself has undertaken the role as artistic director and created a themed visit. Visitors will travel through his creative world, starting with his eye-catching first collection which dates back to 1952. At that time, he launched Les Separates, individual pieces which could be mixed and matched, including the white shirting Bettina blouse with ruffled sleeves and black Broderie Anglaise. A genius with an eye for couture was born !
The rediscovery of a 20th century genius
The exhibition goes on to display an elegant array of pieces in black, white and grey hues. As for the lack of glass panels, this means you can get right up close to the pieces. Much like the runway rhythm, the journey continues through a sea of flighty lace and tulle wedding gowns and ends in a fanfare of hanging hats, almost like a trophy display.
