Manufacture des Gobelins, the prestige of the tapestry
Through a historical monography, the Manufacture des Gobelins pays homage to the tapestry, an artistic expression that has contributed to the cultural prestige of France, since the Middle Ages.
From the Middle Ages up until today, tapestries have always been an exterior sign of wealth. Palaces, châteaux, artistocratic homesteads and museums showcase these exceptional works produced on weaving looms with gold and silver threads. Highly appreciated for their wide array of intense colours, made with natural plants, they have an inestimable historical value in terms of the arts.
The French tapestry, star of the Manufacture des Gobelins
While the Apocalyps or the Lady with the Unicorn are part of our collective imaginary, many of these unique tapestries are still quite confidential. This is the reason why the Éditions du Patrimoine are publishing a book that takes us on a five-century journey, revealing unique beauties, thanks to a dedicated team of art historians, curators and technicians.
A patrimony to rediscover
This work is also a very good pretext to share with you the treasures of famous institutions, with in the front row precious furniture pieces from the Mobilier National, tapestries from the Manufactures des Gobelins and Beauvais, the Cité Internationale of the Tapisserie d’Aubusson, but also the very important collection of the Centre des Monuments Nationaux. A golden opportunity to rediscover a unique and overlooked patrimony…
