Near Berlaymont, the new building of the European Commission, in the shape of an empty cube, has changed the architectural physionomy of Europe's capital. Heads of state and the ministers of the EU will now hold their meetings here, behind the original facade, designed by the cabinet of Philippe Samyn and Partners Architects & Engineers.

This building is a huge transparent patchwork. Its 3,750 windows, composed of frames in massive oak, were found on renovation or demolition sites from 28 countries of the Old Continent, then restored in order to promote the recycling of materials, while showcasing the know-how of artisans and the cultural diversity of the nations implied.

A challenge at the height of a continent

321 M€ for a surface of 70,646 m², the result was well worth the effort, and the project won the Green Good Design Award, a very coveted architectural trophy. Solar panels cover the entire roof and a very clever system collects rainwater. Inside, 374 LED tubes illuminate the « Lantern » of Europa, comprising 3 large conference rooms with 32 interpretation cabins, 10 meeting rooms and 250 offices, including the one of the Council President. It will be open for public visits, on the 9th of May, for Europe Day.
