Art, symbolism, the Samourai exhibition on display in Carcassonne
To celebrate the 160th anniversary of relations between the Land of the Rising Sun and France, the exhibition Art and Symbolism of Japan is taking place in Carcassonne.
Until the 5th of May 2019, aficionados of Japanese culture will have another reason to visit the city of Carcassonne, other than as a Medieval fortress. The exhibition Art and Symbolism of Japan highlights the different facets of Japan by making us discover the story of this archipelago through private collections dedicated to the Samourais and their way of living.

It is taking place in the framework of the 160th anniversary celebrating the relations between the Land of the Rising Sun and France, while focusing on the 150th anniversary of the Meiji era (1868-1912) that led to the discovery of this major Asian civilization by the Western world. With as source of inspiration the main image of a warrior soldier whose martial arts traditions constitute his major patrimony.
A glorious past as heritage
Benefitting from a glorious past since 700 years, these warriors, stemming from military nobility, left a strong imprint on their era. Using historical landmarks, the exhibition reveals this founding myth and its heritage through the ornamentation of their armors, while reflecting the decorative arts of lacquered objects, the delicate art of tea ceremonies and Nô theater.
