The largest cultural centre in the world opens its doors, south of Taiwan

South of Taiwan, the city of Kaohsiung now shelters the largest cultural centre in the world, recently inaugurated.

Cultural complexes are increasing in terms of ambition and size thoughout the world, and the island of Taiwan has inaugurated the National Centre National for the Arts which has changed the landscape of the country's third largest city. Conceived by Dutch architect Francine Houben, from the Mecanoo agency, this cement and glass vessel was constructed on a former military base for the sum of 350 million dollars.

Taiwan showcases the largest cultural centre in the world

The recently inaugurated National Centre National for the Arts spans 4 hectares. Its spaces are entirely dedicated to scenographic arts, and can welcome up to 50 000 persons. To present spectacles on various scales, the building features 2 theaters, with 2 260 and 1 250 seats, a concert room of 2 000 seats and an auditorium of 470 places.

The great orchestras on the ready

Designers have also organized special venues reserved for experimental theater, outdoors, and panoramic observation on the roof. As for the concert room, it draws its inspirations from the ones of the main European philharmonies, with an organ comprising more than 9 000 pipes, the criteria required to appeal to music lovers and leading orchestra conductors…
